Jane Vann will give a talk on the tile vaultings and domes and the lives of Rafael Guastavino and his son at Pack Library, Lord Auditorium, 2:00, Thursday, August 17.
It is expected that people attending the talk will recognize many of the buildings on which the Guastavinos worked: the Biltmore and the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Asheville, the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station and St. John’s Cathedral in New York City, the National Cathedral and U. S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D. C.
Included in Vann’s presentation are photographs and information about Guastavino senior’s estate, “Rhododendron,” known to locale folk as “The Spanish Castle,” located at Christmount Conference Center, a mile outside Black Mountain.
Jane Rogers Vann is a retired seminary professor whose interest in Raphael Guastavino began shortly after she moved to Asheville. Her interests include the history and technology of tile vaulting as well as the aesthetic and design features of this innovative building method.
