Madison County lies North of Asheville. Marshall, the county seat, sits up the French Broad River. This land is steeped in history and tradition. The old Buncombe Turnpike passes through Marshall on which for many years livestock was driven from Greenville, TN to markets in Greenville, SC to link up to Atlanta.
Hot Springs is a small community surrounded by mountains in the French Broad River Valley. This community serves tourism with small B and B's. The Appalachian Trail runs through here and many through hikers stop here for a meal or two and to pick up their mail. The natural mineral hot springs are a fabulous attraction in this quaint town. Mars Hill is the home of Mars Hills University. This cozy village is truly a liberal college town. Many homes dot the hills with Mars Hill being the center where neighbors mingle over coffee.
